Back on track…

With the Emperor’s Challenge done it’s time to get back to the pavement and continue training for the Victoria Marathon.

Anyone’s whos looked online will know that it’s really difficult to find a trianing program that will fit your schedule. I’ve found that I’ve had to put together my own schedule to ensure that I get in the mileage required to run this event safely.

I believe I’ve scheduled in enough rest and cross training, and the mileage increases slowly enough that I should be able to run this injury free. (I’m no expert here but I learned my lesson last year with the knee injury i developed training for the Chetywnd half…)

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday TOTAL
Aug 8-14 X   11   7 16 CROSS 34
Aug 15-21 5   11   7 24 CROSS 47
Aug 22-28 7   13   9 26 CROSS 55

Sept 5-11 7   15   9 29 CROSS 60
Sept 12-18 9   15   9 25 CROSS 58
Sept 19-25 9   16   7 30 CROSS 62
sept 26-Oct 2 7   10   5 13 CROSS 35
Oct 3- Oct 9 5   6   4   42.2 57.2

So there you have it, my running schedule to get me through the marathon. I will be putting on lots of kilometers in the next two months!

  • What are the best training programs you’ve come across for running events?
  • What are your favorite ways to cross train and what do you do to stay injury free?

Emperor’s Challenge Completed!

Race #1 of 2011 is now complete. Another item checked off the ‘bucket list.’

On August 5th, Sarah and I hit the road after work for Chetwynd. We made a short overnight stop and left bright and early for Tumbler Ridge on August 6th.

While it was nice and sunny when we left Chetwynd by the time we were halfway to Tumbler the sky was looking pretty black and we ran into some rain. One quick stop for a bathroom break and change of clothes at the gas station and we were ready to run.

Michelle and I pre-run

We got to the race start line at the base of Babcock Mountain about 20 minutes before the run started. The wind was out in full force and we were ready to get moving ASAP! They had us line up in order of estimated finish time and then we were off.

The race started out on a gravel road which had a series of about 3 or 4 fairly steep switchbacks. I ran about the first 2km and but as it began to grow steeper and steeper I slowed to a walk. This is where I lost Sarah (speedy gonzales!).

Next we were on the Boulder Gardens trail. There was a nice flat section and I was able to get running again for a kilometre or so through here before more steep climbing began.

The route had quite varied terrain. We were running on everything from gravel road, old exploration roads, pipeline easements, gravel hills, scree slopes, mountain ridges, etc.

Yes, that's snow!

The closer to the top the colder and winder it got! The wind seemed to barrel down the mountain valleys and I was glad I’d made that change of clothes.

Summit

At just after 10km we finally reached the Summit. I wish we had had a sunnier day to really enjoy the mountain views but the sky was pretty grey. There was a little bit of rain at the top and one lady passing by was nice enough to point out the rainbow right next to us. I found I was so focused on my footing and the ground in front of me I hardly looked up to enjoy the scenery.

Finally we started to descend the mountain. First on trail down mountain meadows passing by several small tarns (ponds). The gravel here was still pretty loose and you had to be very careful of your footing.

We hit the gravel road again and I could see the finish line in the distance. Let me tell you I was sure relieved! The approx 4 kilometre’s down the gravel road and switchedbacks seemed like a breeze after the grueling climb but the hill climinbing was not over yet. We had another short climb to the finish line. After 20km it really didn’t feel so short.

After a grueling 2:07 for Derek, 2:40 for Sarah and 2:48 for me we were finally done!

Glad to be done!

The Review:

This race was very well organized. There were lots of water stations, the roads were well marked and there was food, washrooms, etc.

The terrain itself was… TOUGH! If you are going to do this race make sure you do a lot of hill training! Also, be prepared for all sorts of weather. The wind made it feel exremely cold! Would I recommend this race. Absolutely. If you want a difficult challenge then this race is for you. Would I do it again? Hmmm… I dont know… Ask me again when its not so fresh.

What’s your favorite adventure race or trail run?

Meals in Minutes

During this weeks grocery shopping trip I picked up a new cookbook, Jamie Oliver’s meals in minutes.

I am quite intrigued by the way the cookbook is laid out. It does the meal planning for you by providing a recipe for a complete meal (including sides and desserts), and apparently the recipes are designed so that the entire meal can be prepared in 30 minutes. Sounds almost too good to be true!

I had a look through and some of the meals look delish. I’m looking forward to trying out some of these meals and reporting back :) – Maybe a new blog feature column?

What are your favorite recipe books?

The new house – photo tour

Since I spent a good chunk of Sunday cleaning house (moan, groan, sigh…) and I’m pretty proud of the new pad, I thought I’d start a photo tour :)

Emperor’s challenge training update:

I had a wicked cold and was doing no running for about a week and a half and It’s been really hard to come back from. The wet muggy weather hasn’t helped either! But… I did get back at it this week.

On Saturday Sarah and I ran a 16km from my house to the university and back through the trail system.

Tonight I ran the Blue Spruce trail with Stef and Jer.

Only 2 weeks left!

2011 – a year for the record books!

We’re only part way through, but 2011 has been a HUGE year in my life. I thought I’d share some of the highlights.

  • New Wheels

Earlier this spring I traded in the Civic on a new Ford Explorer. It was sad to say goodbye to my first car but I am loving the new mobile. It is nice to drive, the SYNC system is awesome and its very roomy and comfortable! I mean come on, heated leather seats and remote start are almost mandatory in PG!

  • New Puppy

After almost a year of waiting Earl Grey was born this February and joined our family at the end of April. I love him to bits, even though I’m now counting down days until his next dog obedience class starts!

Baby Earl Grey
  • New House

At the end of June Ryan and I said goodbye to our first house and moved to a brand new house. We are still settling in but are loving the new locale. Next up? Landscaping!

Home Sweet Home
  • I’m running both a half and a full marathon

On August 6th my sister and I will joining the billy goats and will be running the Emperor’s Challenge 20km climb up and down Babcock mountain in Tumbler Ridge, BC. Keep your fingers crossed that the rain stops or it may be more of a mud bath than a run!

Next up on October 9th my friends Stef, Kate and I will be running the Victoria marathon. At least we’ll have a flat course for the longer run.

  • We’re getting hitched!

On November 17th Ryan and I will be joined by our closest friends and family on the beach and Mexico and will be making our vows.

And… last but not least… drumroll please…

  • New job

On August 18th I will be leaving my current employer of approx 7 years in public practice accounting and on September 6th will be starting a new job. I will be Controller for a local heavy construction company. I will be sad to leave many friends behind but am excited for the new challenge.

Quite a year, wouldn’t you say?

What are your highlights for 2011?

Rain rain go away!

I am starting to get tired of the non-stop rain we’ve had this summer!

Well, at least Lindsay, Deb, Earl and I made the best of it this evening and we went and walked the Forest for the World trails this evening in the rain.

Earl thought he was scared of the rain at first but soon he was running around like a crazy man. He’s curled up in bed now and I am soon to follow. I’ve got some fresh reading material to put me to sleep.

Sorry Ryan, I haven’t kicked the magazine habit yet!

Marathon Training – photo tour

Since I’m putting on so many kilometers to train for the Emperors Challenge and Victoria Marathon, I thought instead of lots of boring posts talking about my various training runs I would give you a photo tour of Prince George, as seen by foot!

June 20th run – 13km long run:
